LIFE AT SOPC
Community Outreach
The third pillar of the Mission Statement at Sherman Oaks Presbyterian Church is “to reach the world for His purpose.”  This involves the movement of our faith from self-focus to engagement in the lives of others.  We can do this through the power and love we experience ourselves in relationship with Christ.
The SERVE Committee and/or Mustard Seed Committees at SOPC give regular financial support to the following organizations.  Support of these organizations also includes clothing and food drives and on-site volunteer activities to strengthen and support the ministries within our own community:
Hope of the Valley
Family Rescue Center
Mena and Jim Davis, Asian Children’s Relief Fund

Serve Our Congregation
Whether it is outside of the walls of our church campus or within the community of our own congregation, we are called to serve each other with our hearts.

Serve one another humbly in love.

                                   Galatians 5:13

There are many opportunities to serve our congregation:

  • Mission (actively bless/serve those in need in our community and fundraise for global mission efforts)
  • Outreach (get the word out to others about SOPC)
  • Sunday School (teach or volunteer)
  • Adult Bible Study
  • Sunday Refreshments
  • Fellowship (connect others in small groups)
  • Worship Services (plan and prepare)
  • Welcoming/Ushering
  • Sound and Media (help facilitate the worship services)
  • Choir
  • Contemporary Praise Band
  • Nursery School (help grow our church and school ministry relations)
  • Office assistance (in the church office during the week)
  • Special Events (planning, set-up, clean-up)

Call the church office to find your place to get connected utilizing your gifts and talents.

Kids
We want parents to worship and enjoy the message knowing their children are in a safe and secure environment.
All paid staff members and volunteers have undergone extensive background checks.  They are trained to ensure all children are well cared for.

Nursery – Infants to 3 years
The Nursery Care staff at SOPC love and care for the youngest family members.  They feed, change diapers, play, and wipe tears.

Discipleship Ages 3 years through 4th grade
Not only do we want kids to know and experience a relationship with Jesus Christ at an early age, we want them to have fun in the process!  Our children’s program combines age-appropriate Bible teaching with music, activities, games, and crafts that promotes trust and friendship and creates an environment of anticipation for the next time we get together on Sundays and for other regular sponsored events.

Regular events include:

  • A monthly Movie Night with pizza and popcorn
  • Vacation Bible School
  • Annual Halloween Carnival
  • Christmas Concert
  • Christmas Caroling

Women’s Bible Study (include picture of Patt and Janet!)
On Thursday at noon, the church is host to 50+ women from SOPC, Bel Air Presbyterian Church, and Hollywood Presbyterian Church, among others.  The afternoon begins with fellowship and refreshments at noon and flows into a time of worship, study and prayer.
Currently the group is studying in the book of Joshua under teacher Irene Simmons.   If you desire inspired insight, thought provoking conversation, and going deeper in your faith while getting to know some fabulous women who love Jesus, please join us!

Prayer Ministries
SOPC Prayer Chain
What began as an outreach by deacons has become an ongoing ministry of praying for the needs of members in our congregation, our extended family, and our world.  Whether it be for physical healing, the mending of personal relationships, financial blessing, or growing in a deeper relationship with Christ, all requests are responded to by a team of fervent prayers seeking the heart of God on behalf of others.
The evidence of God’s love is astounding, as the results of this prayer ministry attest to God’s goodness and desire to see His people healed and whole.  Please contact the church office with your request for prayer.
In-Service Prayer Team
Jesus said:

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing,

and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

                                                                                                                               John 14:12

We believe this to be true.  Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord is willing and able to do the great works of God through His people.
Our In-Service Prayer Team focuses on the following:

  • Worship of God as the sole source of power and love capable of answering prayer.
  • Closeness with Him as priority.
  • Listening to hear the voice of God.
  • Following the leading of the spirit as to how to pray for others.
  • Rejoicing in the good things the Lord is doing/has done.
